Conserving and Restoring Wildflower-rich Grasslands in Monmouthshire

Wildflower meadows and pastures are more than a beautiful part of the traditional British countryside.  They are vitally important habitats for a wide range of flora, fauna and fungi.  In Monmouthshire, as everywhere in Britain, meadows have declined over the last century, but it is possible to restore them with proper management.  We help local field owners to re-establish and conserve their grasslands and to maintain the rich variety of plants and animals they support.

WHO ARE WE?

Monmouthshire Meadows Group is a registered charity which was set up to conserve and restore flower rich grasslands in Monmouthshire and the plant and animal species dependent on them by facilitating the management of those lands in line with this purpose.

WHAT DO WE DO?

  • Manage 3 grassland reserves in Monmouthshire for plant, invertebrate and animal wildlife
  • Survey and monitor meadows in Monmouthshire with the permission of member landowners
  • Maintain a database of meadows in Monmouthshire and map these for purposes of establishing how meadows are doing in Monmouthshire
  • Provide advice and support to members in the management of their grasslands of whatever size
  • Provide training to our members and others in plant identification and grassland management techniques
  • Highlight the importance of meadow habitats through public events including our annual meadow open days and our bi-annual meetings
  • Support the development of wildlife corridors in conjunction with other organisations with similar aims through our mapping project.
