About Us

Monmouthshire Meadows Group is a registered charity, number 1192542

The objects of MMG Charitable Incorporated Organisation:

To promote the conservation, protection and improvement of hay meadows, grasslands and unimproved pastures in the Wye Valley and elsewhere in Monmouthshire so as to conserve and restore the diversity of plant and animal species native to that environment, in particular but not exclusively, by facilitating and promoting the management of those lands consistent with that purpose.

History of Monmouthshire Meadows Group

The group first began in Spring 2003, following the example of our neighbouring conservation group across the Wye, the Parish Grasslands Project in Gloucestershire.  Within 18 months there were more than 60 members with a total of 300 acres of grassland sites ranging from small garden mini-meadows to sites well over 30 acres.

In 2016 Monmouthshire Meadows Group secured 2 reserves; Ida’s meadow in Maryland by bequest and the purchase of two meadows at Kingcoed near Raglan. The latter was thanks to generous grants from Biffa Award and other funders, as well as many donations from our members and supporters.

In 2018 the group gained Charitable Status as Charity Number 1111345 and grew to over 200 members with grassland scattered over Monmouthshire.

Since 2019 Monmouthshire Meadows Group has leased land at Wet Meadow, near Trellech, bringing the number of our reserves to 3.

In November 2020 Monmouthshire Meadows Group was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, charity number 1192542

Partnerships

We work closely with other conservation agencies including Natural Resources Wales, the Wye Valley National Landscape, and Gwent Wildlife Trust who have a representative on our committee.

Membership

Membership of Monmouthshire Meadows Group is open to anyone with an interest in conserving and restoring meadows and grasslands in Monmouthshire. Our members vary from those wishing to create a small wildflower area in their gardens to those with larger fields and farms. Owning a meadow is not a prerequisite and we welcome the support of interested individuals who do not have any land.

Membership of Monmouthshire Meadows Group is £10 per year. This fee entitles the member and a partner living at the same address to attend all our events. Members are subscribed to our newsletter which provides news of all upcoming events, and will also receive our bi-annual newsletter. Only members can vote at our Annual General Meeting. For more information see our membership page.
